Foundations of my practice: Honesty, integrity, respect and learning

My professional journey, from critical care paramedicine to healthcare education, is built upon core strengths: honesty,  integrity, and respect.  Each of these effect my love of learning, teamwork, fairness, and perspective. These values were crucial in clinical practice for patient advocacy and communicating challenging realities, and they continue to guide my teaching. I present authentic experiences and openly address the complexities of healthcare. My love of learning drives me to stay current, helping students connect theory to real-world applications. Teamwork fosters collaborative and respectful environments, while fairness ensures clear expectations and objective evaluations. My perspective allows me to view healthcare and education as interconnected, both aiming for excellent patient care and the development of competent, ethical professionals.

A hands-on approach to learning and collaboration

My work thrives in a hands-on, experiential environment. I learn best when expectations are clearly demonstrated, followed by opportunities to apply skills independently. Constructive feedback, focusing on both process and outcomes, is vital for refining my performance. I excel in team dynamics, valuing the diverse knowledge, experience, and expertise that contribute to shared goals. While I am highly goal-oriented, my unwavering integrity ensures that ethical standards are never compromised. My commitment is to doing what is right, not just what is effective.

Ethical practice and educational impact

Ethical practice is the foundation of my beliefs, and I have often been recognized for my unwavering honesty. I believe that self-honesty is essential for building trust in both professional and personal spheres. I deeply resonate with the principles of the Hippocratic Oath, especially its emphasis on avoiding harm and prioritizing the patient's well-being, values I steadfastly upheld throughout my EMS career. These experiences, combined with my passion for teaching, led me to healthcare education. Here, I find purpose in sharing knowledge, developing curricula, and promoting evidence-based practice. A recent testimonial from a former student, describing how they applied my teachings in their practice, powerfully reinforces the impact of my work and my dedication to developing future healthcare professionals.
